Hi, I'm Mary.
FDN-P · former ER Nurse · Mom
Let me share a little about my journey as a health coach. I spent years working as an ER nurse, and I genuinely loved the work. There is nothing like the team-approach, the life-saving moments, and the privilege of being present for people in their worst moments. My time in the ER provided me with experiences I can never replicate, and my training in trauma, mass casualty triage, life saving medical care and so many more things are skills I will always be so grateful to have.
Amidst all this, there was a pattern I couldn't stop noticing.
Patients would come into the Emergency Room with symptoms they'd been living with for years — fatigue, digestive dysfunction, brain fog, infertility, miscarriage, migraines, etc. We'd run the standard tests, all labs would come back normal, and they'd be discharged with no real explanation and no clear path forward. Most would be told to follow up with a specialist who could take up to three months to see them. Many had already tried this and the ER was their last resort. This process led to more waiting, more questions, more medications, no answers.
I always had a heart for those who lived in this frustrating cycle.
When I encountered functional medicine, it reframed everything I thought I understood about chronic illness. Functional testing doesn't just confirm the absence of disease -- it aims at prevention and investigates the body's milieu. It asks why the body is struggling, not just whether or not it has crossed a clinical threshold. It focuses more on restoring optimal function versus treating disease.
I found that in the functional medicine field, I could continue being the health detective I was in the ER, but now I could do it in a different way. I'm a stay at home mom and I understand the reality of not having unlimited time for appointments, follow-ups, and ongoing sessions. That understanding shaped Beyond the Symptoms and its model. I want to provide a way to access meaningful data and actionable guidance without the time commitment. You order your labs, receive your report, and move forward on your own schedule. I want you to be educated and empowered. This work lets me do something I find genuinely meaningful in helping others find answers, while still being present for the people who matter most to me at home. It is my hope that you will find answers, healing and all you have been searching for on your wellness journey.
Credentials
What this service is — and what it isn't.
I want to be transparent about the nature of this work. I am not a physician. I do not diagnose, treat, or prescribe. I don't offer ongoing coaching or maintain a therapeutic relationship with clients. What I do is facilitate access to functional lab testing and provide educational interpretation — a framework for understanding your data and a set of evidence-informed recommendations you can evaluate and act on as you see fit. You are always the decision-maker. I want to empower you to take charge of your own health.
